LAKE SUPERIOR SPORTSMAN’S CLUB CONDUCTS HUNTER SAFETY TRAINING COURSE
On Saturday, June 4th, the Lake Superior Sportsman’s Club (LSSC) completed another Hunter Safety course at the club’s facilities located at 31433 W State Hwy M64, near Silver City, Michigan. This was the first course we’ve offered after a two-year hiatus due to the many COVID restrictions and uncertainties. LSSC continued the “Home Study” course format for this year’s program. This format only requires one day of attendance for field exercises and a written test.
A total of 18 students completed the course and received their Hunter Education Certificates. Congratulations to each of them! There were 5 adults; 2 male and 3 female; and 13 youths; 10 male and 3 female. The course was taught by Certified Hunter Safety Instructors Walt Toepfer (LSSC), Steven Amsler (CO GLIFWC), and former instructors Guy Kitzman, and Chad Kitzman. The course consists of firearms handling instruction, live firing with .22 rim-fire rifles & 20-gauge shotguns, archery, a general review, and a written exam. Upon the conclusion of the class, a drawing was held among the students for a hard plastic gun case suitable for a scoped rifle. The winner was Kirsten Sheffield. Congrats to her!
Also participating and assisting with this event was Ontonagon County Sheriff Dale Rantala and MI CO Byron Parks. Additional assistance was provided by LSSC members Joe Kukanich, Bob Gustafson, Don Harris, and Rick Tessmer. Lake Superior Sportsman’s Club appreciates those volunteers that made this program a success.
No date has been set yet for LSSC’s next Hunter Safety course; however, once determined, it will be announced in advance and posted on the DNR website; the “Home Study” format will likely be used again. For further information on Hunter Safety or LSSC please contact Walt Toepfer (885.5334).
